General Motors Corp. said it will invest another $300 million in its Powertrain Tonawanda engine plant, bringing its total investment in the New York factory to $1.5 billion over the past 10 years.

The new capital will be targeted to the production of a new dual overhead cam V-8 engine, with production scheduled to begin in 2009. The Tonawanda plant already makes engines for products ranging from the Chevy HHR and Malibu to the Hummer H3.

"This all-new engine will play a critical role in GM's exciting future luxury vehicle portfolio," said John Buttermore, GM Powertrain vice president of global manufacturing.

Renovation of the Tonawanda plant will begin in the fall.
